Job Title – Mechanical Chargehand

Reporting To:  Departmental Supervisor

Department – Mechanical/Sandblasting

Supervises :    Mechanical team, Apprentices and             Trainees

Job Purpose:

To oversee daily operations within the department; assist in planning, coordinating and directing activities in accordance with best practice and industry standards.



A Mechanical Chargehand has in excess of five (5) years practical experience, is proficient in conducting routine and complex activities on rotating equipment including but not limited to overhauling and  preventative  maintenance..


The incumbent must have the ability to provide technical guidance to other machinist, act as a mentor/coach. Uses sound judgement and logical thinking.




  • To provide day to day hands-on assistance to other departmental supervisors and the immediate team members to ensure efficiency

  • To ensure relevant shop floor personnel  undertake  their duties in accordance with :


  • set quality standards,

  • the company’s health and safety policy and OSH

  • good industrial practise.


  • To manage and ensure efficient use of manpower, machine and other resources to meet departmental requirements and to provide excellent customer satisfaction.

  • To work with the HSE Coordinator to ensure a safe work environment, adhering to all safety guidelines implemented by the company.

  • To ensure compliance to all quality standards with regards to calibration, material usage, procedure to execute tasks etc.

  • The ability to set up, operate and troubleshoot machinery/equipment independently.

  • Inspect completed works for conformance to specification using applicable tools.

  • Communicate regularly with the team, both individually and as a group, to ensure good two-way communication concerning operational issues and flag issues \ concerns upwards.

  • To determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed and repair machines or systems using appropriate tools.




  • Must have at least five (5) years’ experience working with rotating equipment - pumps (fire water), turbines, compressors etc.

  • Troubleshooting experience required

  • Efficient in use of all measuring equipment

Overtime, weekend and public holiday work may be required
