JOB DESCRIPTION – ANIMAL HEALTH ASSISTANT

Duties & Responsibilities but not limited to:
a)    Ensure accurate farrowing records are collected including, birth records, deaths, treatment, medication, stock, animal weights/growth and movement.
b)    Implement and maintain bio-security and sanitation practices required for the farrowing unit.
c)    Perform daily evaluation of animals and identify animals that require treatment
d)    As a result of performing “C”, make recommendations for preventative treatment/action in an attempt to avoid medication treatment if possible
e)    Identify sick animals and administer treatment to pigs and piglets under supervision/advice of a veterinarian/qualified person
f)     Supervise and perform when needed to, post farrowing care tasks for the piglets and mothers
g)    Perform herd health activities on the farm (eg. vaccinations, de-worming)
h)    Supervise farmhands/labourer’s to ensure duties are performed.
i)     Provide routine farrowing assistance to sows when needed.
j)     Perform Teat Stripping Protocol for all farrows
k)    Conduct training sessions for staff on basic piglet care/processing
l)     Report all tasks undertaken during a specified reporting period to Production Supervisor and/or management
m)  Any other reasonable farm task as delegated by management.

Qualifications
Diploma in Animal Health, Production and Veterinary Public Health or Equivalent
