Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess at minimum, a PhD from a recognised university, in Structural Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Earthquake Engineering, Wind Engineering, Computational Structural Mechanics or a closely related field, with a B.Sc. (Honours) in Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering, or equivalent/related Engineering discipline.
Candidates should also possess:
At least three (3) years’ teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at a recognised tertiary institution or university, in the field of Structural Dynamics, Structural Engineering or a closely related field
A good record of relevant research and publications in reputable peer reviewed journals in the area of Structural Dynamics, Numerical Modelling, or related fields
Experience in the supervision of student research projects at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
A strong foundation in Structural Dynamics and Numerical Analysis of Structures under time-varying and extreme loading conditions
A strong competence in Numerical Methods, Computational Structural Analysis, and Finite Element Modelling (FEM/FEA)
Familiarity with commercial and open-source structural analysis software
Candidates with the following would have an advantage:
Membership in a recognised Professional Engineering Body
Experience in teaching and research in Earthquake Engineering, Wind Engineering, or Structural Response to Extreme Loading
Experience in the areas of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Numerical Modelling of Structural Systems
A good record of industry interaction to provide practical industry experience to students
Specialisation in Earthquake Engineering, Wind Engineering, Computational Structural Mechanics, or related fields of Structural Engineering
A strong background in earthquake-resistant and/or wind-resistant structural design
Evidence of contributing to funding proposals and successfully obtaining funding for research
Ability to contribute to curriculum development in Structural Engineering, particularly in dynamics and computational methods
The following would be considered assets:
Certification in university teaching and learning
Industrial or consultancy experience in Structural Design, Dynamic Analysis, Seismic Design, Wind-Resistant Design, or Computational Structural Engineering
Experience in fracture and crack mechanics
Experience in the application of Emerging Digital Technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Structural Engineering Research, Analysis, or Design
Advanced knowledge of Computational Structural Mechanics and Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis
Key Responsibilities
Teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in area of expertise
Preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials, workshops, and seminars
Developing, reviewing, and updating curricula, course materials, and assessment methods for delivery across multiple platforms
Appling emerging Artificial Intelligence and data-driven methods in teaching, research, and structural engineering analysis
Setting, moderating, and grading assignments, tests and examinations, and others forms of assessment
Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, theses, and research activities
Providing academic advising, mentoring, and support to students
Conducting high-quality research and scholarly activities, including publishing in peer-reviewed outlets and disseminating research findings
Developing research proposals and seeking external funding through grants, contracts, and collaborative initiatives
Collaborating with academic staff, industry partners, and external stakeholders to advance teaching, research, and outreach activities
Participating in Departmental, Faculty, and University Committees and Administrative activities
Attending and contributing to professional meetings, conferences, workshops, and other academic events
Engaging in professional development activities and maintain currency in the discipline through scholarship and professional engagement
Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department or designate
